The big question is what is organic gardening? It is all about gardening in the most natural way. We’ve got some organic gardening tips and tricks for how to start a vegetable garden from scratch. Give these a go and you’ll be eating organic homegrown veggies in no time.
Make a good compost. Start by using fallen leaves, weeds, grass clippings, old fruit, veg trimmings. This all helps to feed the soil and give it lots of organic matter.
Prepare the soil before planting. Mix your compost (from tip 1) into your soil. Garden soil needs to be rich to grow the best vegetables!
Choose the right plants/seeds for your garden. It’s best to choose the veg that you want to eat. There is no point in planting courgettes if you don’t like them!
Weed every few weeks and remember to add them to your compost. Now, this is very important, you don’t want the weeds stealing all the vegetable nutrients.
Water your seedlings or plants in the morning. Less water will be lost to evaporation as it is normally cooler at this time.
If it looks good enough to eat, it probably is! Keep an eye out for your pride and joy. The more you pick the more the plant will produce.
Remove diseased leaves and plants. Regularly check leaves and stems for pests and dispose of garden litter. Make sure to clean your tools often & wipe with disinfectant to avoid spreading anything bad to your other plants.
Maintain your garden with mulch, this helps the soil retain moisture in the summer and helps prevent weeds from growing and protects the roots of the plants in winter.
Use organic fertiliser. This helps feed the plants and maximises yields, whilst also working with nature; the way food should be grown.
Sit back and enjoy growing your organic vegetables that are healthy and natural. You’ll be amazed at how quickly you can start your own organic garden.
